Air fryer or microwave? Buy for the meal you actually make

Two kitchen buys can sit at a similar price and solve quite different problems. Before chasing a discount, work out what you want dinner to look like.

Start with the job, not the badge

If your usual problem is reheating a bowl of yesterday's food, look at the microwave first. If it is cooking two separate parts of a meal, look closely at basket layout and timing. Neither question is answered by the biggest capacity number on the box. Write down your three most common meals, then ask which appliance would remove a real nuisance from each one.

What these two listings offer

Currys lists the Philips NA565/92 at £199.99. Its listed 9.5-litre basket system can divide into two cooking zones or combine into a MegaBasket, with a sync function for finishing together. Those are useful things to investigate if dinner regularly means two foods with different timings. They do not prove that every meal will fit or taste better. Check the cooking guide against your portions before buying.

Appliance City lists the Samsung MS32DG4504GGE3 at £159.99. The listed specification is 32 litres, 1000 W, seven power levels and a 318 mm turntable. That gives you a concrete measurement to compare with the dishes you already use. A large nominal capacity is less useful if your favourite container cannot rotate freely.

Measure the space you lose

Currys gives the Philips dimensions as 352 x 292 x 496 mm, height x width x depth. Appliance City gives the Samsung as 297 x 517 x 424 mm. Mark those footprints on the worktop, then check each manual for ventilation clearance and allow room to open the door or pull the baskets out. The appliance has to work in your kitchen, not just in a photograph.

Our buying view

Choose the problem you need to solve first. The Philips is worth investigating for divided cooking and coordinated timings; the Samsung is worth investigating if a freestanding microwave with room for your dishes is the missing tool. If your current appliance already does the job, neither price is a reason to replace it. We have not cooked with either model, so this is a specification-based buying guide, not a hands-on verdict.
